First car buying guide and budget checklist
The purchase price is one part of owning a car. A realistic budget leaves room for the costs that arrive afterwards.
Create a monthly allowance
Allow for insurance, fuel or charging, servicing, tyres, parking and unexpected repairs. Obtain a real insurance quote for the specific car before committing. Vehicle tax and other charges depend on the vehicle and can change.
Choose useful equipment
Prioritise features that make your usual journeys easier. Check the condition and operation of equipment in person. A well documented service history may be more valuable to you than optional styling extras.
Leave a repair buffer
A cheap purchase can become expensive if immediate work is needed. Review the MOT history and ask about upcoming maintenance. If you cannot assess condition yourself, consider an independent inspection.
Keep the decision yours
Avoid being rushed by claims of another buyer or a short-lived offer. Compare several cars and ask someone you trust to join a viewing. You can leave if the information does not add up.
