How to sell your car, step by step

Make the details easy to understand, show the car honestly and give buyers a useful starting point.

Gather the essentials

Write down the make, model, variant, registration year, mileage and asking price. Gather maintenance records and note the number of keys and any extras included. Do not publish full identity documents or your home address in your advert.

Price with context

Look at comparable cars with similar mileage, condition and equipment. Asking prices do not prove completed sale values. Allow for known repairs, age and your own timescale. AutoZer does not currently provide automated valuations.

Photograph what matters

Choose an uncluttered location in daylight. Capture the front, rear, both sides, cabin, dashboard, boot and any relevant defects. Use photographs of the actual car you are selling. Avoid showing documents, faces or other people’s number plates.

Write an honest advert

Explain ownership, servicing, condition and the features a buyer can confirm. Mention faults and damage clearly. Avoid vague claims such as immaculate if they do not reflect the vehicle. Proofread the mileage and price before submission.

Manage enquiries and handover

Check your AutoZer inbox regularly. Arrange viewings thoughtfully, confirm insurance for a test drive and verify payment with your bank before releasing the car or keys. Keep a written record and follow the official process for telling DVLA about the sale.
