Used car buying checklist

A good decision starts before the test drive. Use this checklist to turn a promising advert into a considered purchase.

Before you travel

Ask whether the car is still available, confirm the asking price and request details of its service record, condition and known faults. Compare similar cars by age, mileage and specification. A low price is a reason to investigate, not a reason to skip checks.

Look beyond the photographs

View the car in daylight. Compare paint across panels, look at tyres and inspect the interior. Check that the features described in the advert are present and work. An independent inspection can be useful if you are unfamiliar with the model.

Check the paperwork

Match the vehicle details to the documents and ask about the ownership history. Review the MOT history using the official GOV.UK service. A MOT record is not a full vehicle history check and does not establish ownership or reveal every problem.

Take a considered test drive

Agree the route and confirm appropriate insurance before driving. Try a range of road conditions where safe. Listen for unusual noises and check the controls. Do not let time pressure replace careful inspection.

Before money changes hands

Verify the seller and vehicle independently. Agree the price and what is included in writing. Be cautious about requests for deposits before viewing, shipping arrangements or payments to a different person. AutoZer does not hold vehicle payments or provide buyer protection.
