What to check on a used electric car
Start with your charging routine, then work through the car’s battery, cables and real-world suitability.
Work backwards from your journeys
Think about a normal week, your longest regular trip and where the car will park. Compare the vehicle’s charging capabilities with the chargers you expect to use. Public charging availability and tariffs can change.
Ask about the battery
Request any available battery health report and understand its date and method. Ask about the remaining manufacturer warranty and any conditions. Dashboard range is an estimate, influenced by temperature, driving and recent use.
Check charging equipment
Confirm which cables are included and their condition. If possible, see the car charge. Ask about both AC and rapid charging capability, because the headline maximum rate is not a guarantee throughout a charging session.
Inspect the rest of the car
Tyres, brakes, suspension, heating and electronics still matter. Check service records and recalls through official sources. Compare the specification to what you need rather than relying on a trim name alone.
